Capacity Optimizer
About us
The grid connection is the bottleneck — not the chargers
Across Europe, charging rollout is limited by grid capacity rather than by demand. A site planned for six fast chargers often ends up with two, because reinforcing the connection costs hundreds of thousands and takes months or years. The chargers are available, the funding is there, the demand is there. The connection is not.
Capacity Optimizer removes that limit without touching the grid.
WHAT IT DOES
A controller installed in the site's electrical cabinet measures the installation's total consumption at the meter and redistributes power across the connected chargers in real time. The site always stays within its agreed capacity, and every charge point that was planned can actually be built and operated.
The result is more charge points on the connection you already have, commissioned in the same weeks as the chargers instead of waiting for the distribution network operator.
HOW IT WORKS
The CO-LB-100 is a DIN rail mounted gateway that sits between the site's main meter and the chargers. It reads the installation's actual power draw, applies the limits and priorities you have configured, and writes updated setpoints to each charger — continuously, in a closed loop.
- Communication with chargers and meters over Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU and M-Bus
- Ethernet with integrated 4G as a second connectivity path
- Headroom reserved per charger so units can ramp when capacity allows
- Web dashboard for configuration, live power allocation, sessions and history
- Limits and priorities can be changed remotely, without a site visit
WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT
Control runs locally. Load management is often delivered as a software feature inside a charge point management system. In that arrangement, balancing depends on the link between the site and the platform. If the SIM card fails, the router drops or the site loses connectivity, balancing stops while charging continues — and the installation can exceed its agreed capacity. Capacity Optimizer runs on site. If the connection is lost, balancing continues on the last known configuration and charging is unaffected.
It measures the whole installation. Many solutions only see the chargers. We measure total site consumption at the meter, which matters wherever charging shares a connection with other loads — ventilation, cooling, tenants, production.
Vendor independence. The same controller works across six charger brands and six energy meter brands in live operation, so a site is not locked to one manufacturer and can be extended with different hardware later.
It grows with the site. The same unit handles peak shaving, battery storage and solar when those are added, rather than being replaced.
WHERE IT IS USED
- Public DC fast charging sites
- Fleet depots and logistics
- Vehicle dealerships charging demo and staff vehicles alongside public charging
- Commercial and industrial properties where charging shares a connection with building loads
- Sites built out in stages, where the connection sets the pace
ON THE ROADMAP
Battery storage integration is in commercial operation, coordinating a site's battery with its charging. Spot price optimisation and grid ancillary services are in development, so a charging site can move from being a load on the grid to a resource for it.
ABOUT US
CapOpt is a Swedish, founder-owned company. Capacity Optimizer has been in daily commercial operation since 2023, and development is grant-funded by the Swedish Energy Agency. We work primarily through electrical installers and consulting engineers, and we are small enough that customers deal directly with the people who build the product.
COME AND TALK TO US
If you have a site where the connection is the constraint, bring the numbers — connection size, charger power, what the network operator quoted. We will tell you honestly whether load management solves it.
